With one musical production on the books, this production was an opportunity to go bigger.
From the Wertheim School of Music, we engaged a double cast, full orchestra of undergraduate and graduate music students, conducted by faculty. Conducting students observed several rehearsals as part of their class.
I added additional students as pit singers. This was a special opportunity for freshman as well as necessary support for the sound of the production.
I also included a student assistant director, an additonal dance captain, and internal understudies within the ensemble cast. These roles, relatively new to FIU theatre productions, were not only important learning opportunites, they proved necessary as an intense bout of the flu fell over the cast going into opening weekend. The production had enough preparation and coverage to save all but one performance from cancellation. Since this production, several plays at FIU have also added and utilized understudies and/or swings.
In all, more than 100 people
participated in this production.
