ANNUAL LOAD: EVALUATION FROM DEPARTMENT CHAIR:
2025 -- 2026 10% service in progress
10% admin "Moving forward, we cannot restrict excessive effort in the area of service, as that will hinder the growth and development necessary to a new degree, which de Guzman was hired to achieve. Instead, an adjustment of future assigned effort will be made to reflect the additional administrative load."
2024 -- 2025 10% service 5: outstanding
"Professor de Guzman’s contributions to departmental service are consistently strong and above and beyond. She is actively involved as the Head of Musical Theatre, and as the only dedicated faculty member in this area, she is creating new classes while establishing curricular developments and tracking all BFA majors in her department. She is on several additional committees, which carry a higher burden than the average Assistant Professor, as her expertise and active presence are needed in almost every aspect of the department simultaneously. Her expert knowledge is required, but this demands considerably more effort than reflected in this assignment, and is required to make the degree successful. De Guzman has been integral in recruitment trips and represents the face of FIU theatre in a professional and personal way that reflects and supports the brand of a small program with close and individual attention. The energy and effort she puts into recruitment is an excellent attraction for prospective students. She is building the brand and image of FIU BFA in Musical Theatre. In addition to department service, she has been active in university service."
2023 -- 2024 10% service 4: very good
"Once hired, Professor de Guzman was thrust into leading the BFA in Musical Theatre program into light by meeting with Music faculty, Theatre faculty, and guest artists. She has been busy looking at the bright future of the program and designing/redesigning curriculum, which has been her main contribution in the area of service. She is making important and necessary decisions and suggestions about the direction of the program. Ms. de Guzman also served on the very busy Recruiting Committee with distinction, as well as the critical Season Selection Committee.

Head of Musical Theatre
As the only dedicated faculty member to Musical Theatre and its area coordinator, I am tasked to develop the BFA in Musical Theatre degree program (established 2022). The unique demands of this position prompted the Department Chair to revise my assignment in 2025. From Chair Jennifer Ivey's faculty evaluation, Spring 2025: "[de Guzman's] expertise and active presence are needed in almost every aspect of the department simultaneously. Her expert knowledge is required, but this demands considerably more effort, and is required to make the degree successful."
DUTIES INCLUDE:
• curriculum oversight
• schedule recommendations
• faculty mentorship & collaboration with School of Music + Dance Minor
• assist with acquisition of guest artists (accompanist, choreographer, etc.)
• student mentorship
• individual pre-advising for all BFA MT students
• casting advocacy
• production collaboration with School of Music + Dance Minor
• advocate for musical theatre titles in season planning
• report student learning assessment
• liaison for student issues
• facilitator for BFA MT Juries each semester
• coordinate and manage BFA MT program's final callback audition weekend
• allocate scholarship awards to incoming BFA MT students
• Working with our academic advisor, I created a Majors Map that outlines a suggested path through the BFA Musical Theatre curriculum. The map considers the ideal progression or scaffolding of training, student time management, and typical course schedules. It serves as a guide for current students as well as a reference for potential incoming students. Since creating this map, all other degree programs in the department have followed suit, creating and/or refining, and increasing the utilization, of such maps for their curriculums.
• I collaborated with faculty and staff to design and equip a dedicated musical theatre practice room in our building. I created and maintain a reservation system for this space. It is used by musical theatre and acting students for study, rehearsal, and self - taping.
• I started the tradition of hosting a BFA Musical Theatre majors meeting, each Fall semester. This meeting serves as a meet and greet for majors, a time for announcements and information specific to the degree program, and to build camaraderie and culture within the major. The inaugural meeting (Fall 2025) included the "MT Cup Games," where each cohort competed in a series of team--building games. The winning cohort is deemed holder of the MT Cup, a trophy displayed in our lobby.
• I created and/or revised marketing materials related to BFA MT to be used in recruiting and online. Soon after, the Department of Theatre was inspired to do a major revision and unification of marketing materials for all degree programs.
• I participated as a consultant/key expertise for Musical Theatre in the Department of Theatre's National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST) Self-Study, presented by the department for consideration by the NAST Commission on Accreditation.
• I lead the significant evolution of the department's callback auditions for prospective incoming freshman and transfers. The short monologue appointment for BFA performance shifted to a weekend of recruitment efforts for BFA performance + BFA musical theatre. Prospective students experience:
-
a full callback with live accompanist for Musical Theatre
-
a dance call for Musical Theatre
-
a campus tour and Q&A led by our current theatre students
-
a written guide to explore Miami for out of state prospectives
-
an invitation to drop in and observe classes
-
a ticket to see our current production
